2007 Determination of Conditions

Application to Determine Working Conditions

D.P.Williams is set to re-open Ding Quarry, he has applied through his agents Carter Jonas to have Rochdale Council determine the up to date working conditions to allow him to remove vast quantities of stone from Ding Quarry.

750,000 Tonnes per year for 30 years.

Councillor Metcalfe said: "In 1995 there was a strong campaign against the plans and I hope it can pick up where it left off. "I have a number of concerns about work on the quarry as it will cause extra traffic in Rooley Moor Road and Caldershaw Road.

It could also have an impact on the environment as the quarry is surrounded by moorland. If a group is formed to oppose work on the quarry, I will back it. I want to see a similarly ferocious campaign to that of 1995, when local people turned out in force to prevent lorries from accessing the Lanehead site.

The quarry is situated next to moorland which we must preserve. Even if we end up losing the fight we have to do our best to preserve this landscape.”

Simon Danczuk (Rochdale’s Labour Parliamentary Candidate) said:
“Ding Quarry should never be re-opened.
The lorries that would constantly go back and forwards to the quarry would cause a real misery for local residents; they would put a strain on our local roads and infrastructure and be a source of potential danger to us and our children.
The adverse environmental impact of re-quarrying the area has also to be taken into account – there is significant historical and archaeological interest in the area and local people use these moors extensively for their leisure pursuits.
We must do all we can to ensure this application is rejected.”

Paul Rowen MP said he has received over 100 objections to the plan. His office is also busy distributing leaflets in the hope of encouraging more people to come forward.

He said: “I wholeheartedly support this campaign against the re-opening of Ding Quarry. The unease about the future of Ding Quarry has gone on for far too long. This council needs to act to make sure that no one is in any doubt that Ding Quarry will never re-open again.”
